Hyundai has confirmed that it is in discussions with Google about a partnership as the Korean car maker looks for external technology expertise to remain competitive. Hyundai has been adopted Apple's CarPlay and Google parent Alphabet's Android Auto, which integrate iPhone and Android handsets with their car’s dashboards. Now it appears that Hyundai is considering developing autonomous cars with Google.

Unlike rival automakers, Hyundai and affiliate Kia Motors have shunned joint ventures or alliances to make high-cost, low-volume sports cars and electric vehicles. Hyundai wants to develop ties with tech companies and Silicon Valley technology leaders in order to be part of the future development of connected cars and autonomous driving.

Google's own self-driving prototype car unit has logged more than 2.7 million km (1.7 million miles) of autonomous driving in the U.S. The technology company has given no timetable for the production and public sale of self-driving vehicles. In May of this year, Google agreed to work together with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to build a fleet of 100 self-driving minivans.
