Strong numbers were present for the time of year in Kilmallock Mart on Monday for one of its final sales before closing for Christmas.

In total, 230 animals were present, with all but a handful selling. Bullocks made up the vast majority of these, with a strong trade throughout the weight divisions.

Speaking after the sale, Kilmallock Mart manager Denis Kirby said: “The auctioneers were reporting a very strong trade.

“We had mostly bullocks on show, with the majority of lots bought by farmers.

“Continental bullocks from 400kg to 550kg sold up to €2.34/kg.

“Lighter Hereford- and Angus-cross were up to €2.34/kg, while fit cattle sold up to nearly €2.20/kg.

“We could’ve sold a lot more if we had them. Prices seem to be going up and the supply of cattle is getting smaller.”

Bullocks aged 12 to 18 months were seen throughout the day making €400 plus the weight, with a top of €455. This wasn’t as high for the full dairy stock, with prices rising to €150 with the weight.

A good share of first-cross stock was on offer, with both Angus and Hereford bullocks freely making the €2/kg mark.

This April 2019-born Friesian bullock weighed 540kg and sold for €860 (€1.59/kg).

This pair of March 2019-born Simmental bullocks weighed 455kg and sold for €890 (€1.96/kg).

These three Angus bullocks born spring 2019 weighed on average 453kg and sold for €920 each (€2.03/kg).

This Hereford bullock born April 2019, weighed 410kg and sold for €830 (€2.02/kg).

This December 2019-born Limousin steer weighed 450kg and sold for €1,050 (€2.33/kg).

This May 2019-born Salers bullock weighed 470kg and sold for €900 (€1.91/kg).

This February 2019-born Friesian bullock weighed 485kg and sold for €790 (€1.63/kg).

Some of the upper end of lots included a batch of seven Herefords with an average weight of 389kg that sold for €840, a single Angus weighing 530kg that sold for €1,080 and a group of four Herefords weighing 486kg selling for €1,010.

Continental bullocks secured an added premium on this price. One Limousin weighing 520kg sold for €1,180, two Charolais weighing 400kg each sold for €860, while a single Limousin weighing 450kg sold for €1,050.

Weanling numbers are starting to drop off throughout the country, but demand is still quite strong.

One standout lot was a Hereford weanling bull weighing 190kg that sold for €470 or €2.47/kg.

Light Charolais and Limousin bull weanlings were also hitting that €2.50/kg mark.
