At this time of year, most Galway marts don’t run due to the Galway Races attracting visitors from all over.

This year is different though with the races being held behind closed doors, so the draw to the city is no longer there.

While the horses were racing, the Portumna livestock mark was in full flow, with its first sale using the Irish Farmers Journal online bidding tool Martbids.

Numbers on the day were up substantially on what would be expected for this time of year with just shy of 270 animals on offer.

Cull cows again proved in high demand while better quality lots continued to secure the upper end of prices.
