With less than a week to go before the first of the country’s two major National Hunt store sales, it was encouraging to see the recent Brightwells auction of form horses and point-to-pointers post an encouraging set of returns.
The last sale at Cheltenham before the autumn saw a number of talented pointers sell well and this should help trade at the upcoming Goffs Land Rover and Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sales.
Last week’s auction posted an improved set of figures with 43 of the 57 horses offered finding buyers. This saw turnover come in at just short of £2.5m, while the £57,198 average represented a significant progression on 12 months before.
Centre stage was occupied by the King’s Theatre mare Theatre Territory who was snapped up by Highflyer Bloodstock’s Anthony Bromley for £200,000. She will join Nicky Henderson for leading owner Robert Waley-Cohen. The half-sister to the high-class Glencove Marina won a Ballindenisk point-to-point for Cork-based Damien Murphy last month.
This price was closely matched by Tom Malone when he gave £190,000 for this year’s Cheltenham Bumper second Modus.
Nicky Henderson will take charge of another nice type in Ronnie O’Leary’s Baden, who made a winning debut in a Bartlemy point which saw David Minton pay £160,000 to secure the Martaline gelding.
Leading pointing handler Donnchadh Doyle received £155,000 for the recent Tralee scorer Monbeg Notorious, who will join Gordon Elliott’s team. Elsewhere Doyle’s Dawstown winner Grey Storm was picked up by Grange Clare Paddocks for £100,000.
Among the other interesting lots was Sabrina Harty’s Fairyhouse bumper winner Peter The Mayo Man and he fetched £120,000. The Margaret Mullins-trained Lake View Lad, third in a Punchestown festival bumper on his debut, made £70,000 and will continue his career in Britain.
