Cavan’s autumn sport horse performance sale delivered a middling returns. Run over one day, the renewal produced a modest sale topper of €6,800. The lack of a middle market saw figures slip to with a clearance of 58% (61% in 2017) and an average of €2,566 (€3,130). Domestic buyers dominated trade although the Swedish contingent had an influence.
Sale topper
At €6,800 Noel Ryan’s five-year-old son of Pacino was the top lot and will remain in Ireland. One of four lots to break the €6,000 mark, the gelding impressed under Gemma Phelan.
He was the subject of a lively exchange before Jim Derwin outbid British event rider Fiona Davidson. Locally bred by Andrea and Rebecca O’Reilly, he was sourced by his Nenagh based vendor two years ago. He is out of Billis Lady and by the thoroughbred Buster King.
Older horses
After a steady start the trade picked up. Paddy Murphy’s five-year-old Connemara gelding Millers Lad by Funambuke 11 sold to Yorkshire dealer Graham Sugden for €6,300. He won the RDS small event horse qualifier at Scarteen and numerous working hunter classes.
“He’s everything you would want in a ridden Connemara,” remarked the buyer. “He has a lovely temperament, he moves and he jumps.”
Patrick Murphy’s Shirsheen Robin illustrated that horses with experience were at a premium. The homebred seven-year-old gelding by Womanizer out of Rain Shine (Senang Hati) has 46 SJI points. Although not sold in the ring, he was snapped up by Swedish buyer Peader Elfstrom for €5,500.
Pat O’Donnell’s small gelding Bernaderg Flash, by Moores Clover sold for €5,300. Bred to be a pony, but growing over the height, he was bought by Emerald Irish Horses.
Brian Sheehan’s homebred Keamore Flamenco sold for €5,200 to Stephen Gair. The gelding is by Je T’Aime Flamenco out of the grade A jumping dam Keamore Cruis (Cruising).
The four-year-olds struggled to make an impact. Heading the nine to change hands at €6,000 was Kennedy Sport Horses’ homebred gelding by Future Trend.
Three-year-olds and ponies
Momentum gathered for the three-year-olds as pin hookers were keen to buy. However, they were selective resulting in some inconsistent returns. Nicky Cousins’ three-year-old filly by his resident stallion Dignified Van’t Zorgvliet impressed and Daniel Lynch payed €6,500 for her.
James O’Shea’s gelding by Camillo VDL was sold to Robert Frazer for €5,800.
There were a number of well related fillies on offer. Anthony Connolly’s Pride of The Hill, by Tolan R. A half-sister to the dual Lanaken representative Renolli (1.50m) looked well bought at €5,300 by English customer Steven Gibson.
The pony sector was unusually subdued despite a keen group of Swedish buyers on site. Mark O’Brien’s Connemara jumping pony Highburren Dubh by Golden Glint was secured by Arthur McNabney at €4,000.
