Following on from his success there in July, Ireland’s Conor Swail was again in top form at last weekend’s $2 million Spruce Meadows Masters, in Calgary, Canada.
On the opening day, the Co Down man had a third in the jump-off class with Martha Louise but, on Thursday, he went two places better to take first and second in the $50,000 Atco Cup.
After a 14-horse jump-off, he won it with Martha Louise and slotted the stallion Landowne into second. For good Irish measure, Dermott Lennon came third on Hallmark Elite.
Adding more joy for his new owners Susan and Ariel Grange, Conor also won two of the younger horse classes in the outer ring. With Arista, he took the $15,000 Oxford Cup and on Game Ready, he was first in the $25,000 1.40m Phillips Cup.
Unfortunately for Swail, Lansdowne had an eight and a four in Saturday’s Nations Cup, in which Ireland finished sixth. Billy Twomey and Tinka’s Serenade jumped a clear and four. Shane Sweetnam (Eregast) and Shane Breen (Balloon) both had one down in each round. After a three-way jump-off, Germany won ahead of Belgium and France.
At the last Division II Furusiyya qualifier in Arezzo, the Irish had a rather unusual exit after the first round. Capt Michael Kelly retired Drumiller Lough. Then, although Alex Duffy (Living The Dream) and Niall Talbot (Nicos de la Cense) both went clear, when Hayley Dunne had three down on Flintstone de Tiji, Irish fate was sealed. Brazil won ahead of France and Switzerland.
Meantime at the Humlikon three-star show in Switzerland, Jessica Kürten had a 1.45m win with Contador.
