WITH the Irish Shows Association finals in full swing, here’s a round-up of recent All Ireland champions, starting with Tinahely. The Wicklow show once again hosted the Red Mills two-year-old colt/gelding final, judged by Rachel Bennet-Hamilton and Russell Owens, from Warwickshire, held on the August Bank Holiday Monday. Hurst Show Horses won here with their home-bred Tattygare Something Special (Porsch), who was also the champion young horse at Roscommon and Mohill. Reserve went to Donnie McGale’s Corniche Chill (Chillout. Breeder: Ann Jennings) who ended the week as the Dublin reserve young horse champion and in third was Declan Fahey’s consistent winner, Irishman (Nigrasine. Breeder: Sandra Walsh).

Bonniconlon hosted the Diamond Coast Hotel three-year-old Irish Draught filly final on that same day, when disappointingly, only three finalists came forward. The champion here was another home-bred in Eddie Murphy’s Holycross Grace (Holycross), another to add a Dublin reserve title (Irish Draught mare) later that week. Reserve and third in the Denis Dullea and Thomas McCrann-judged final were two more home-breds in David O’Toole’s Baby Bouncer (Clew Bay Bouncer) and Dermot Cawley’s Coolera Cool Dancer (Crosstown Dancer). Two more Mayo owners struck last weekend in the Irish Draught All Ireland finals. Kathleen Cunney’s home-bred I Dream Of Ruby (Inisfree The Holy Grail) won the Hannons Hotel yearling filly final at Roscommon last Saturday and reserve was Pat Murphy’s Puntabeg Farmers Lady (Tors Gentleman Farmer), another exhibitor-bred. Seamus Sloyan’s Clewbay Tiffany (Clew Bay Bouncer. Breeder: Tom Burke) took third in the Valerie Davis and Michael Casey-judged championship. The Roscommon final is part of Horse Sport Ireland’s national showing series another round taking place in Mohill the following day.

Fintan Flannelly and Michael Kirwan judged the Leitrim Breeders Irish Draught mare/foal combination final which resulted in a win for James Duffy. His winning mare Kilmovee White Carnation (Carrabawn View) was the last pure-bred Draught winner of the 2004 Farmers Journal Limerick Lady final as a two-year-old and her colt foal is by Harkaway Lionhawk. Reserve went to Seamus Sloyan’s three-time Leitrim Breeders champion, Elm View (Elm Hill. Breeder: Raymond Sloyan) with her Dublin champion colt by Fast Silver. Liam Lynskey zoomed up the line-up to take third with another former winner in Lady In Red Star (Holycross. Breeder: Eddie Murphy) and her Kilcotton Cross filly.
