While the presence of a mart near a town centre can be seen as a burden on sale day, one mart in the southwest is taking advantage of its central location.

Earlier this year, Kanturk co-operative mart developed part its car park into a secure pay parking area for use by visitors and locals alike. What was previously a piece of waste ground has been turned into a further revenue stream for the farmer owned co-operative.

Initiative

On officially opening the car park, Maura Walsh CEO IRD Duhallow, congratulated the mart for providing a service to the farmers of the Duhallow in northwest Cork for the last 59 years. She also commended the mart committee under John Cott for using their initiative to build this facility.

Safe parking

Fenced off and with 55 spaces, the car park is located centrally in Kanturk town.

Speaking on the new venture, mart manager Seamus O’ Keeffe said: “We developed it with the help of IRD Duhallow, who were very good to us both in terms of advice and a grant.

"It’s open since June and it’s serving the people of the town and visitors. It’s a great addition because parking in Kanturk has been a big problem down through years. Some residents park here at night because they know their cars are safe as there are security cameras here 24/7.”

At a cost of €2 per day, the fees contrast greatly with larger urban centres in the country. Asked if he would be advertising the use of the car park further afield, Seamus O Keeffe quipped: “If they want to come from Dublin, they can contact us and we’ll give them parking no problem.”
