Former Glanbia plc managing director John Moloney is one of five new directors appointed to the board of ABP Foods. He joins the board as director and chair designate.

Larry Goodman’s son Mark has been appointed to the board, while ABP UK’s managing director has also joined, alongside chartered accountant Fergal O’Dwyer.

Four ABP Food Group board members are retiring: Ron Bolger, Laurence P Goodman (son of Larry Goodman), John Jackson and Philip Morgan. The group said it wished to acknowledge the service, direction and leadership given by retiring board members.

The new appointments will join existing and continuing board members Larry Goodman, who remains in his role as executive chair, and Frank Stephenson, group chief executive.

The new board members

John Moloney has a 33-year career in the food and agribusiness sector. He is currently a non-executive director of DCC plc, where he is chair, and of Smurfit Kappa Group plc. He has also served up to January of this year a seven-year term as a non-executive director of Greencore plc.

Well known to farmers, he was group managing director of Glanbia plc from 2001 to 2013, having held senior management positions within that organisation, including chief executive of Food Ingredients and of Agribusiness. Earlier in his career he worked in the meat industry and in the Department of Agriculture and Food.

Tom Kirwan stepped down from his position as ABP UK managing director last October. Kirwan began his career at ABP Cahir in 1982. In 1990, he moved to ABP UK where he held a number of senior positions, in Wessex Foods, the convenience division and as managing director ABP UK since 2009. He has been instrumental in the ongoing development and growth of ABP UK.

Chartered accountant Fergal O’Dwyer, chief financial officer of DCC plc, also joins the board. He will be stepping down from his executive role in July 2020, a position he has held since 1994. Through his tenure at DCC, a diversified sales, marketing and distribution business, O'Dwyer has gained significant experience in financial management, treasury, strategic and corporate development, and acquisitions. He previously worked with KPMG and PwC in audit and corporate finance.

Finbarr McDonnell joined the group in the 1970s. He worked in the Irish meat division, including plant general manager, managing director of ABP Ireland and Poland and since 2017 as group chief operations officer of ABP Food Group.

Mark Goodman joins the board having begun his career with ABP after graduation. Over 15 years, Goodman has worked at various ABP Ireland plants. Since 2011, he has held the role of managing director of ABP International, the international trading wing of the group. Most recently, he has been instrumental in developing ABP’s Asian markets.

Commenting on the announcement, Larry Goodman said: “These new appointments to the board of ABP Food Group will enhance board capacity and capability and will facilitate the ongoing development and strategic leadership of the business.”
