Dear Editor: My name is Samuel Heffernan, aged nine, from Ardfield, Clonakilty, west Cork. I am a big fan of the Irish Farmers Journal and enjoy the machinery section.

My parents always remind me that my first word was “tractor”. As long as I can remember I have loved farming. My grandad was a tillage farmer and my grand-uncle is a dairy farmer. I love farm machinery and have a big model farm at home. I collect different types of farm machinery including a potato picker, crop spreaders, tractors, trailers and sheds.

I really want to be a farmer when I’m older. I’m saving at the credit union for my first tractor. Going to the National Ploughing Championships last year with my family was one of the best days of my life. I can’t wait to go back this year.

I live next to my granny’s farm where a farmer grows barley. Harvest time in summer is my favourite time on the farm. I love living in Ardfield near many farms and being by the sea.

Thanks for reading my letter,

Samuel.
