The centre piece in this table runner is made from a popular patchwork block called a ‘friendship braid’, using strips of fabric joined together at an angle.
Although it looks complicated, it is easy to accomplish and can be made up very quickly. Once the centre piece is put together, there are only two side seams and a short seam across the top and bottom and the runner is complete.
Make it in bright colours to freshen up your kitchen, more classic colours for the dining room, or choose a selection of Christmas prints to make it festive.
Directions
1Following diagram A, lay fabric strips together to form centre piece of runner (picture one). Sew strips together taking ¼” seams, clipping threads as you go and pressing all seams in an upward direction.
2Press. Trim down to 7” by 44” (diagram B)
3Lay the centre piece and backing fabric right sides together. Align the long sides to bring left edges together. Sew down left side seam. Now bring the centre piece over to the right and align the long sides to bring right edges together. Sew down right side seam. Turn tube right side out and making sure borders are even and friendship braid is centred, press.
4Fold runner in half, lengthways, with friendship braid on the outside. Sew each short side, taking ¼” seam. Turn right side out to form a point at each end (picture two). Press. Top sew down edge of each triangle to the front of the table runner to keep in place.
TIPS
1 If you love the patchwork block and can’t bear to hide it, turn your points to the back instead, thereby showing off the entire block.
2 Stuck for time? If you don’t feel like making the friendship braid, put a lovely feature fabric (7” by 44”) in the centre and border it with a plain fabric around the edge. This is much quicker to make up and a great way to show off a ‘picture’ fabric.

3 If you wish you can attach a tassel to each end of the runner to add interest.
