You can feel the clean aura that only comes with recently refurbished rooms as you pack away your clothes in the Glenlo Abbey. But it is sitting in the light-filled spaces, such as the 18th-century Abbey, that will help you escape the world outside should you require that.
Although there are lots of activities including a driving range, leisurely walks to Lough Corrib and Pendleton bikes parked outside for the complimentary use of guests, the real novel element of your stay in Glenlo will be the Pullman restaurant.

The Pullman is comprised of two dining carriages, one of which – the Leona – was part of the original Orient Express. Aside from covering routes from St Petersburg to Monte Carlo, she also starred in the film adaptation of Agathe Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and was part of Winston Churchill’s funeral cortege. This carriage has seen more than most, although the staff, who hail from all around the world, might rival her knowledge collectively. And when asked for information on the food they did not disappoint. My recommendation: the king oyster mushroom starter with confit egg yolk, Gubbeen chorizo and chive (right). Sensational.
