The West Cork Chamber Music Festival – 28 June-7 July: This will be the most impressive celebration of chamber music in Ireland including musicians, masters and students, established composers and apprentices, string players and wind players, solo sopranos, vocal consorts and many more who will all gather in Bantry for 10 days of intense music making. There are up to six concerts each day, plus up to four 90-minute masterclasses, a series of pop-up fringe events, public artist interviews and talks. There is even a class on what to look for when choosing an instrument. Tickets are €50, visit www.westcorkmusic.ie.
The Snapper – Daily until 24 August: In 2018 the Gate Theatre commissioned Roddy Doyle to write a stage version of his much-loved Dublin novel The Snapper. This new adaptation played to packed houses in 2018, bringing in new audiences who had never visited the Gate before, and now the production will return to the Gate stage again this summer. The play offers a warm, frank and wickedly funny account of family life and pregnancy in northside Dublin in the 1980s. Fun fact: the Gate Theatre sits right next door to the Rotunda Hospital where Sharon’s baby is born! Tickets are €15 and are available at www.gatetheatre.ie.
Apollo 11 – 28 June: Apollo 11 is a 2019 American documentary film edited, produced and directed by Todd Douglas Miller. It focuses on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, the first space flight to land humans on the moon, one of humanities greatest achievements. The film consists solely of archival footage, including 70mm film that was previously unreleased to the public. Upon its premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, the film received positive reviews from critics, who mostly praised the quality of the film’s footage. This highly anticipated film is set for release in Irish cinemas from 28 June.
Paddy Crazy Horse – 4 July: Tommy Tiernan takes to the stage with his brand-new show Paddy Crazy Horse at the Marquee, Co Cork. He rants and raves, he dances and acts the eejit. He tries to be very silly and very serious at the same time. He mixes a love of comic rebellion and a refusal to be conscripted into a rational view of the world with a deep grá for talking and the poetry of everyday speech. Using high theatricality and lots of dirty words, this is a fast-paced and exuberant celebration of everything that’s wild, wrong and wonderful about being alive right here, right now. It is in turn clever and then really stupid. Tickets are €31.50 and available at www.ticketmaster.ie.
The Unmanageable Sisters – 28 June-2 July: This witty Dublin-inspired musical comes to the Abbey Theatre for six highly entertaining evenings. Green Shield Stamps, a million of them, and Ger Lawless has won them all. It’s Ballymun in 1974 and happiness is at her fingertips. But when 15 friends and family gather to help her claim her winnings, all bets are off. During one fateful night, these determined women bring you into their lives in the ferociously funny The Unmanageable Sisters.
