Despite taking place the weekend before the 2019 Dublin Horse Show, there was plenty of support for the Mullingar three-day Grand Prix show.

Forty-four riders battled it out in the Underwriting Exchange National Grand Prix on Sunday, with nine proceeding to the jump off. Tim MacDonagh and Hollypark Gallowat claimed the winner’s share of the €4,000 on offer, when they delivered a double clear in 43.96 seconds. This combination are certainly proving to be ones to watch, they won the TRM HSI New Heights Series in Omagh, finished sixth in National Balmoral and Tattersalls and third in Maryville last week.

In the Underwriting Exchange Grand Prix, the same combination finished third in Ballinasloe and second in Cavan. Bred by John McCann and owned by Jackie Lee, the nine-year-old is by Castlelawn Galloway and out of Whitestown Diamond.

Paul Carberry jumped clear with Brandonview First Edition in 44.47 to finish second. This combination claimed victory in the 1.35m and 1.20m Mervue in Tattersalls and have clocked up a series of consistent results in this series. Bred by Seamus Drea from Kilkenny, the nine-year-old gelding is by Douglas Cavalier out of the Balda Beau-sired mare Brandonview Lady.

Carberry and Brandonview First Edition also featured in the line-up in the Mervue Equine Leinster Tour, slotting into third in the 1.20m section on Saturday at Mullingar.

Harry Marshall and Barcelona kept all the poles in place, albeit in a slower time of 45.45 for third. The 13-year-old Dutch-bred gelding is by Vittorio out of a Japer-sired dam, Folita. Stephen Murphy claimed fourth place with Chantelle, when he delivered a clear round in 49.67.

Savannah Barry was fastest of the four faulters with nine-year-old Carambole-sired gelding Flambeau, stopping the clock at 49.53 for fifth. Sixth in the earlier 1.35m Mervue Equine Leinster Tour, Katie Conlon returned to again take sixth with Ping Ball, when she finished on seven faults.

Summer Tour

On Saturday, Eddie Moloney strengthened his position on the Mervue Equine Leinster Summer Tour leader board by winning the 1.35m section. Riding Cruicerath Flexianna, he jumped clear in 32.99.

Moloney has been a consistent contender in the league, he finished second in the opening round at Barnadown, first at Coilog and third at Tattersalls.

Bred by Kildare’s Gerry Campbell, the nine-year-old mare is by Flexible and out of the Holland-sired dam, Pannamarenca. Moloney also came third with Quiara M, jumping clear in 33.42. This 15-year-old Quidam’s Rubin-sired mare was also campaigned by her owner Kayleigh Soden up to 1.35 level.

Nicholas Butler won the 1.20 section with Pacco Lion, when clear in 29.02. Bred by Patricia Nicholson from Co Meath and owned by Butler, the six-year-old gelding is by Pacino and out of the Errigal Flight mare, Kariga Lion. It was a good outing for Eddie Moloney as he finished second with Nike when clear in 29.39, and fourth with Peter O’ Toole’s five-year-old Cobra-sired mare Ardkyle First Edition, clear in 30.51.

Winner of the 1.10m section was Offaly’s Aoife Healion with David Sloane’s Cicero-sired gelding, Jandini Van De Moeren, when they delivered the winning clear round in 31 seconds.
