Gurteen Agricultural College was the chosen location for the recent Irish launch of McCormick’s new and updated tractor cab. The new, roomier Clever Cab is available on X7 and X8 models. Although first previewed at Agritechnica in 2023, it is only now that units are making their way to market following the global slump in tractor sales that since followed.

While the new cab immediately looks more modern from a styling point of view, we caught up with Kevin Phelan, General Manager of Argo Tractors Ireland to get the lowdown on what exactly has changed.

More room with a better finish

McCormick’s new larger and roomier Clever Cab is now currently available on the X7.6 and X8 models – soon to be introduced on the X7 short wheelbase tractor range. The new cab benefits from more headroom and also gains an improved finish and ergonomics of the controls.

For those looking for more comfort, the standard mechanical cab suspension can be upgraded for a new semi-active cab suspension system.

Inside the cab there is 14% more volume, resulting in an increased headroom height of 76mm. Visibility has also been improved as a result of a 14% increase in glass coverage. There is an additional 120mm of seat travel.

The Clever Cab claims to be a quieter working environment, with up to 66dB in VT models and up to 68dB in P-6 Drive powershift models.

To the rear of the cab, there is now a larger rear window, new rear mirrors and a new fender design, with new LED lights and fender controls for the rear PTO and lift, a s well as hydraulic services.

New DSM Plus display

Its standard 12” DSM Plus (Data Screen Manager Plus) touchscreen monitor is now paired with a second 12” digital dashboard with encoder control. The second 12” screen is located centrally in front of the driver, where the traditional tractor dash is placed. This duo integrates McCormick’s own newly developed in-house suite of management software for in-field operations and remote diagnostics, a platform that is said to be in development for more than five years.

These two new displays appear in a crisper, tablet like display, rather than previous versions which were perhaps perceived as being that bit chunkier. This follows a similar trend amongst other tractor manufacturers, such as Fendt and New Holland. One nice feature which will be widely welcomed is the incorporation of the GPS receiver into the cab roof, rather than it being externally mounted. The Clever Cab’s four-speaker Alpine audio system, is now compatible with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, completes the picture.

The Alpine audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard.

The DSM Plus pack includes a 12in digital dash cluster and a 12in DSM monitor running McCormick’s own software.

Glass

To reduce the burden on the air-con system, and help save power, the cab glass has been changed.

McCormick has sourced the glass from glazing specialist Saint Gobain. It explained that operators benefit from an environment that is up to six degrees cooler than the current cab generation thanks to the Comfort Sky factory tinted glass panels. And it is not just a summer time benefit, it also helps keep the cab warm in winter.

Speaking at the launch, Kevin Phelan, general manager at Argo Tractors Ireland, said: “In recent decades, the tractor cabin has experienced a significant evolution, having transitioned from a structure which primarily protects drivers from the weather, to a fully functional and more highly customised operator environment.

“And through the design and rollout of the Clever Cab, Argo Tractors has delivered a facility which provides a more comfortable space for today’s tractor operator.

“The modern tractor cabin is, effectively, the operator’s work station. It’s where many of our customers spend their entire working day for weeks and indeed months at a time.

“The climate-controlled Clever Cab sits on top of power units that are engineered for the most demanding of on-farm and transport tasks, which is why comfort and functionality are equally significant in McCormick’s latest design innovation.”
