Wilson Engineering debuts new contactless steering system
Wilson Engineering presented its new electro-hydraulic steering solution. The system was fitted to a 36ft quad-axle low-loader, which featured twin rear-axle steering.
Unlike the forced steering systems currently available on the market, the electro-hydraulic solution now offered by Wilson does not require any push rods, specific hitches or drawbar bumpers as result, making it the first Irish trailer built with this kind of steering system.
Working via load-sensing hydraulics, the solution in question is offered by German company, Hydac and supplied via Distag QCS. A wheel speed sensor in conjunction with the tractors onboard technology establishes the steering angle and turns the axle accordingly. The only requirement is that the tractor is equipped with Isobus and load-sensing hydraulics.
Laden with all the bells and whistles, this particular trailer destined for a customer in the west is equipped with air suspension, front lift axle, ABS, rear hydraulic jacks and a 10t winch.
The trailer is also fitted with sliding cheese wedge ramps, both of which can slide inwards and outwards from 0.5m to 2.9m. Wilson claims that it is the only European manufacturer offering this configuration. The contactless steering costs an additional €9,500 plus VAT over the standard forced steering system. The high-specification trailer on display has a price tag of €75,000 plus VAT.
