As well as livestock and trade stands, the Tullamore Show is home to the Macra farm skills final, which takes place annually.
This year Patrick Cronin, Adrian Curtin and Matthew Wharton from Awbeg, Avondhu Macra club took home the national title. They competed against five other clubs in a number of tests aimed at developing the skills needed in modern agriculture. The competition also increases the awareness of farm safety by ensuring best practice.
“It’s to show off the skills of what you're doing every day and to come together as a team. There are three members on the team and they would have been training for several weeks before hand, there is great camaraderie and it’s good for your club to win,” says dairy farmer and judge Larry Murphy from Co Cork.
