There was a strong trade for store lambs and cull ewes at the weekly sheep sale in Plumbridge Livestock Mart last Thursday.

Short keep stores were typically making £125 and more, especially for Texel and Suffolk-bred lambs. Example prices include a batch of 18 Suffolk-cross ram lambs that sold for £127 and a pen of five Texel-bred ewe lambs sold for £126. Lambs that will require a slightly longer finishing period were generally making around the £115 mark. This includes a batch of 36 light Suffolk-cross lambs that sold for £117 and a pen of 22 Cheviot lambs made £113. Crossbred ram lambs bred from Blackface ewes which were coming off hill ground were selling for around £110. For example, a pen of 14 Mule ram lambs went for £109 and a batch of Hilltex ram lambs made £107. There was only one pen of purebred Blackface ram lambs for sale on the day and these sold for £76.

Whilst it was mostly stores on show, a few pens of fat lambs were on offer too.

This included a dozen ewe lambs with 24.2kg half weights which made £137. Similarly, a dozen 24.6kg ram lambs sold for £138. There were numerous entries of cull ewes on the day. One of the top prices was a pen of well covered Texel-cross ewes which made £172. A run of Blackface ewes with broken mouths and correct udders were sold by a local farmer and these made from £78 to £98.
