Kilfenora schoolteacher Jonathan Keane became the first local to win the South of Ireland Amateur Open Golf Championship at Lahinch Golf Club since 1968 on Sunday. His father, Johnny Keane, is well known in pedigree cattle breeding circles for breeding champion Shorthorns under the Bushypark prefix in Co Clare.
Joyous scenes erupted at the 18th hole, as Jonathan was embraced by Johnny and his family after sinking the winning putt, adding another championship title to the Bushypark cabinet.
The victory earned Keane a place on the Irish men’s team for next month’s Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa.
