Sheep Ireland hosted its second annual hill ram sale at Manorhamilton Mart, Co Leitrim on Friday 10 October.

The sale featured 219 hill rams across six breeds, all eligible under the Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS) for hill flocks.

Every ram presented was genotyped, sire-verified and scrapie classified.

The sale was designed as a one-stop shop for buyers seeking multiple breeds, and ensured quality through physical inspection at intake.

Those rams failing inspection were not permitted to enter.

The sale achieved an overall clearance of 69%, with prices ranging from €200 to €1,020 and an average of €506, offering options for every budget.

Breed highlights

Cheviots were the second-most represented breed and the most sought-after among farmers around the ring. With 51 rams averaging €599 and a 94% clearance rate, achieving the highest breed average price and clearance of the sale.

The top-priced ram of the sale was a Cheviot hogget, Lot 215, bred by Pat Corrigan, Co Kildare, which sold for €1,020. This was closely followed by another Cheviot hogget, Lot 182, bred by Joe Burke, Co Laois, which sold for €980.

Fourteen Lanark rams went through the ring on the night, with prices ranging from €280 to €860. The top price was paid for a hogget ram, Lot 7, bred by Michael Ketch, Co Waterford. The breed averaged €519 and had a clearance rate of 64%.

The North Country Cheviot had 30 rams of the breed presented on the night, with a 77% clearance.

The breed average was €505 with a range from €200 to €840 on the day. Top priced North Country Cheviot was lot 158, a hogget ram bred by Martin and Jim McEneaney, Co Louth.

The Mayo Connemaras had the largest representation, with 68 rams through the ring. However, demand fell short of supply, resulting in a clearance rate of 56%. Topping this breed section was Lot 88, a hogget ram, bred by Trevor Reilly, Co Mayo, selling for €800.
