Those who turned up to last Saturday’s elite Irish Angus show and sale in Carrick-on-Shannon were clearly intent on buying, with some exceptional prices paid for bulls and heifers. Buyers came from as far as Cork and Waterford, with a notable contingent present from Northern Ireland resulting in an extremely buoyant trade and a tremendous turnout, despite the snow in the morning.

Bulls started at €2,000 and sold to a top of €6,400 for the Friarstown Ideal Pete son Laheens Larry 399, bred by Cathal Duignan, Laheen House, Eslin Bridge, Carrick-on-Shannon. The clearance for bulls at 70% was well up on last year (50% at the same sale) with an average price of €3,500 recorded (up from €3,400).

However, it was the female ring that took the top price of the sale at €6,500 for breeders Michael and Oliver Flanagan, Moydrum, Athlone, Co Westmeath, with their female champion Moydrum Lu Lu.

A buoyant demand for heifers saw a significant lift in the average to €3,100 (up from €2,600 last year) and an 80% clearance (up from 60%). Overall, 13 lots went north.

In the ring, the judge John Appelbe, Carrigroe, Clonakilty, Co Cork, tapped forward Drumcrow Laporto as the supreme male champion. Bred by Frank McKiernan, Lacken Lower, Ballinagh, Co Cavan, he is a July 2014 son of Drumcrow Joker and sold for €5,700 to John O’Sullivan, Jamestown, Castletown- Geoghegan, Co Westmeath.

Meanwhile, it proved a hugely successful day for Cathal Duignan, Laheen House, Eslin Bridge, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, when he not only took home the top bull price of €6,400 but also the reserve male title. The sale topper at €6,400, Laheens Larry 399, a Friarstown Ideal Pete son, was bought by a farmer from Northern Ireland, while Cathal’s reserve male champion Laheens Dan P404, a November 2014 son of Bunlahy John G, sold for €4,300 to FJ Hamill, Downpatrick, Co Down.
