Nigel Heatrick from Glaslough in Co Monaghan has been elected president of the Irish Hereford Breed Society.
Currently serving his first term on the society’s council, Nigel farms under the Glaslough prefix which was established by his father Sam Heatrick in 1951.
Originally founded with the acquisition of one cow and calf, the herd has evolved through the years with the purchase and use of stock bulls.
In the early years, Sam showed Herefords at both the RUAS and the RDS, and ever since Nigel has supported the breed through attendance at shows and sales throughout the country.
Nigel has also served on the board of Irish Hereford Prime for a number of years.
The Glaslough herd has enjoyed some great success over the years. Notably, in 2007, Glaslough Esquire was purchased by the Irish Hereford Breed Society for AI use in its breed improvement scheme. More recently, Nigel won the Ulster Bull of the Year in 2024 with Glaslough Buster who later went on to sell to the Dunlever herd in Co Meath, and Glaslough Yoselin won the overall champion at the society’s inaugural heifer sale in December 2024.
Today, the Glaslough herd consists of 30 breeding females, which Nigel keeps on his dairy and beef farm, with the help of his wife, Theola, and his mother, Dorothy.
Nigel commenced his one-year term as president of the society on 1 July 2025.
Commenting on the appointment, secretary of the society Alan Crowe said: “The society is delighted to welcome Nigel as president, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role. We would also like to thank the outgoing president Darren O’Rourke for his commitment to the role and his good work during his term”.
