Heading up the prices at the Irish Hereford Breed Society's show and sale in Golden Vale Mart, Kilmallock, on Friday was Michael Molloy's bull, Moyclare X Factor HH, at €7,100. Born in November 2024, this full horned bull is a son of the herds stock bull, Moyclare Vance. His dam comes from herd's Rose cow family, combining Caislean Jake and Cill Cormaic Kasper. Sitting around breed average on calving, he carries five-star terminal and dairy-beef indices along with a four-star replacement index of €107. Bringing this second prize winner back to Co Clare was Gerard Considine.

High index bull

Indexes were to the fore on the second highest priced bull, Appel Elite PH, who sold for €6,800 for Cork breeder, John Appelbe. A son of Fisher 1 Profile and the Ringfort 1 Alfie bred dam, Appel 1 Elite, this heterozygous polled bull packed a magnificent set of figures, ranking in the top 20% of the breed for replacement, terminal and dairy-beef. A second prize winner in his class, this 22-month-old bull was the pick of John Lalor in Co Tipperary.

Five bulls sold for €6,000 or more on the day. The first bull to cross into that threshold was Glaslough Bounty HH, when he sold for €6,200. Bred and exhibited by Nigel Heatrick from Co Monaghan, Bounty was awarded the reserve overall championship in the pre-sale show by judge John Paul Scott. A son of Balleen Hitman, this powerful 23-month-old bull came with a four-star replacement index of €112 and will now join Edward O'Connor's herd in Co Limerick.

Coisceim King son

Limerick breeder Maura Cregan was next in line at €6,100 with Tullaha Iarlugh HH. A full horned bull, this July 2024-born bull is a son of Coisceim King and Balleen Ceci 1204, a Cill Cormaic Leo bred dam going back to Gageboro Eugenic. Boasting five-star terminal and sub-beef indexes, auctioneer Eamonn Gaffney knocked him down to Charles McCarthy from Co Limerick.

Padraig McGrath went back to Co Roscommon after parting company with Kye Pat 071 HH for €6,000. Sired by Balleen Flyer, Pat's mother is a daughter of Free Town Nevada. Below average on calving, this full horned bull packed a four-star replacement index of €102 and was the choice lot of Richard Heffernan in Co Tipperary.

Overall champion Clondrina 1512TH PH shown by Declan Donnelly with Tennyson Egar and judge John Paul Scott sold for €5,300.

Overall Champion

For his overall champion, John Paul Scott went for Clondrina 1512TH PH, the property of Declan Donnelly from Co Clare. Born in November 2024, this heterozygous polled bull was light on stars, ranking in the bottom 40% of the breed for terminal and replacement, but did offer buyers below average calving figures across beef and dairy females. Snapping up this Cill Cormaic Perseus son at €5,300 was Maurice Clifford from Co Cork.

Overall, 68% of the 32 bulls in the yard traded to an average of €4,976.
