Midleton show was back up and running at the weekend having had a year out due to unforeseen circumstances. The site in Loughaderra attracted a good crowd at the show revival, particularly with regard cattle entries. While continental breeds saw relatively small numbers, traditional breed numbers flourished with large classes throughout.

Angus

Coming out on top of the Angus section for the second week running was Albert and Jennifer De Cogan. This is the family’s local show and they saw their newly purchased stock bull Cheeklaw Jake Eric R535 out in front. This bull is sired by Cardona Proud Punch and was purchased by the duo in Stirling last February for 10,000gns after being awarded champion on the day.

The DeCogans were also awarded the reserve championship with their two-year-old heifer Knockadrinan Blackbird P599. This one was out of Nightingale Dunbar and is a former calf show champion.

Hereford

In the Herefords Ciara McNamara secured the overall championship with Allowdale Serena. This not even two-year-old heifer was purchased at the Allowdale dispersal sale last year for the top female price of €4,800. She is sired by UK bred bull Haven Kingpin. Reserve was awarded to Trevor Dudley with Kilsunny Lass Matilda. This heifer by Glaslough Judge stood second in class to the overall champion before eventually being tapped out reserve by judge Gerry Lynch.

Simmental

The Gubbins family continued their streak of wins with Quitrent Giselle. This Delfur Decider heifer added another championship to her already strong start having picked up wins at Tralee, Bandon and Newmarket-on-Fergus as well.

Belgian Blue

Seamus Aherne awarded the overall Belgian Blue champion to John Cahalane’s Furehaughty Ice. This two-and-a-half-year-old bull was sired by Attribute and this marked his first day out this year, having secured a number of top prizes as a calf.

Dairy

In the dairy section the overall championship was awarded to the five-year-old Robinview CIX Rowena. Exhibited by Michael McGrath, this third calver is currently given nine gallons with a projected 365 day milk yield of 10,500kgs. Judge Robert Shanahan didn’t hesitate in awarding the CIX-Sept daughter the overall championship on her first day out.
