The senior male champion Moloskey Keltic took the top price of €8,000 at the Limousin premier show and sale in Roscrea last week.

Bred by Brendan Clancy, Mullagh, Co Clare, Moloskey is a five-star son of Fieldson Alfy and is out of one of the top breeding cows in the Moloskey herd, the Mas du Clo daughter Moloskey A392.

With a terminal index of €136 and a replacement index of €90, Keltic sold for export to Gerard Hackett, Clogher, Co Tyrone, for the top price of €8,000.

While the crowd might have been smaller when compared with previous sales, it was clear that those attending were there to do business and secure a good-quality breeding bull.

With prices starting at €1,800, a steady trade saw 78% of the bulls that went through the ring selling for an average price of €3,859 – up from €3,704 at the same sale last year when a record 94% of bulls sold.

Next highest at €7,000 went to the 14-month-old Ampertaine Commander son Cappaduff Kenzi, bred by the father and daughter team of Joe and Jennifer Moran, Claremorris, Co Mayo. A first prize-winner, this five-star bull enjoyed a hugely successful 2015 showing season that culminated in the intermediate northwest male champion of the year award. The buyer was Con Mullane, Newcastlewest, Co Limerick.

The Fieldson Alfy son Millburn King realised €6,000 for breeder Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co Galway. King was placed second in his class and boasts a muscle score of 128 and a skeletal score of 117. His dam Kilcara Ciara has Mas Du Clo and Highlander in her pedigree. The purchaser was Albert Stanley, Johnstown, Co Kilkenny.

Meanwhile, judge Paul Rainey of the renowned Claragh herd in Kilrea, Co Derry, awarded the reserve junior championship to Springvalley Killian, exhibited by Martin Killeen, Mullagh, Co Clare. Just 14 months old, Killian is an eye-catching Wilodge Cerberus son out of the dam Springvalley Gwen. A five-star bull, Killian sold for €5,500 to the Windfieldroad herd of Martin Warde, Menlough, Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

Not far behind at €5,400 was the reserve senior champion Carrefour Jester, exhibited by John and David Kenny, Dunkerrin, Co Offaly. At 17 months old, Jester is a son of Ampertaine Elgin and boasts a muscle score of 135, placing him in the top 2% of the Limousin breed. Jester was one of three bulls purchased by repeat customer Owain Llyr, Tyn-Y-Wern, Ruthin, Wales.

The 15-month-old Wilodge Fastrac son Farmleigh Kenny was bought by Anthony Glynn, Gort, Co Galway, for €5,100 to run with his pedigree Glencarrigh herd. With a terminal index of €143 and a replacement index of €114, he was bred by Thomas Swaine, Enniscorthy.

The 2015 Cork club calf champion Bridgeen Kevin made €5,100 for Ciaran Deasy, Timoleague. With Marchermore Augustus, Fieldson Alfy and Otan in his sire stack, he was bought by Aoife Gibney, Oldcastle, Co Meath.

A number of bulls achieved €5,000. First up was Athlacca Joker, a Wilodge Enrico son, bred by Victor Barrett, New Road, Athlacca, Co Limerick – one of three bulls secured by Alan Mulligan, Dunderry, Navan, Co Meath. Michael and Kevin Graham, Boyle, took home €5,000 for Liverpool Kojak, bought by Lawrence Fallon, Ballinalsoe, while Meelickaduff Kirby, bred by Michael Hester, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, also made €5,000. The buyer was Charles Colthurst, Turret Farm, Blarney, Co Cork.

Wexford breeder Trevor Masterson had a tremendous day, with three young bulls selling price for a combined figure of €14,600. Galbally Kyle 1058, a Galbally Garfield son, was bought by John Taaffe, Dunleer, Co Louth, for €5,000. Also at €5,000 was the Roundhill Saturn son Galbally Kevi, purchased by Tom Dower, Rathkeevin, Co Tipperary, while the final Masterson bull, Galbally Klogan 1062, sold for €4,600 to Jim Parkinson, New Inn, Co Tipperary.

  • €4,600 for the 17-month-old Mount Scott Jade by the stockbull Aloor Felix, bred by Michael Sexton, Aheybridge, Co Clare. He was bought by John Feeny, Athenry, Co Galway.
  • €4,550 for Knockdoounna Kenneth, bred by Marie O’Halloran, O’Callaghans Mills, Co Clare, and bought by Owain Llyr.
  • €4,000 for Whitehall Jethro, a Procters Cavalier son, bred by Daniel Tynan, Mountrath, Co Laois, and bought by Martin Reilly, Aughnacliffe, Co Longford.
  • €4,000 for the Queenshead Altea son Cordillo Keltic, exhibited by William Geary, Feenagh, Co Limerick, and bought by William Champ, Cloneyquin, Co Offaly.
  • €3,800 for Ballyline Kole bred by Bertie Mannion, Curraghboy, Athlone, Co Roscommon. By the stockbull, Gleannari Everest, he was purchased by Michael McHugh, Ballyfin, Co Laois.
  • €3,700 for The Grove Farm Jumbo, exhibited by Bernard Garrett, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan. Born September 2014, Jumbo is by Anside Flint and was bought by Neville Myles, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal.
  • €3,600 for the Fieldson Alfy son Aloor Jupitor, bred by Patsy Creighton, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, and bought by James O’Meara, Birr, Co Offaly.
  • Females

    Described by the judge as an “outstanding, classy heifer with tremendous power and character”, the champion female Kiltorcan Jasmine was exhibited by the renowned Kilkenny hurling family the Reids of Ballyhale.

    Jasmine, a September 2014 heifer, is sired by the AI sire Wilodge Cerberus and out of the first calver Whitehall Goldie, who carries Mas Du Clo and Espoir in her back breeding.

    After a flurry of bids for the day’s champion, the hammer fell at €6,900, selling to an undisclosed customer.

    Next best at €3,800 and heading north of the border was Copperdoor Kim, a 13-month-old daughter of Sympa and the homebred Millbrook Tanko daughter Copperdoor Frances.

    The breeder here was Longford man Michael Brady, while the successful bidder was George McCague for his Bridgeview Limousin herd.

    Claiming the reserve female championship was Esker-Hill Jane. This October 2014 heifer was described by the judge as “a very feminine heifer, oozing style”.

    Wilodge Vantastic was behind this one, while dam Newtown Florence was sired by Ampertaine Abracadabra.

    Jane was bred by Padraig Brady, Ballinalee, Co Longford, and found a new home across the water in the Carlisle-based herd of Steven Wilson for €3,650.

    Limerick-based Brian Frawley, Croagh, secured the in-calf Ampertaine Foreman daughter Lisnageeragh Joyce Girl at €3,550 from breeder Des Joyce,Williamstown, Co Galway.

    Continuing his buying, George McCague secured first prize-winner Knockdocunna Kate at €3,400.

    Bred by Marie O’Halloran, Co Clare, 13-month-old Kate has Wilodge Cerberus, Sympa and Nestor in her lineage.

    Ciaran Bogue, Belturbet, Co Cavan, secured €3,000 for his in-calf heifer Stragheglin Jenny.

    Jenny is a daughter of Ampertaine Commander and sold to Batt O’Callaghan, Newmarket, Co Cork.

    Overall, females saw a mixed trade, with 58% of heifers selling for an average price of €3,151 – back from €3,397 and an 86% clearance at the same sale last year.
