The opening date of the new €100m fuel subsidy scheme for farmers and contractors will be revealed on Wednesday of next week, with Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon stating this Friday that they will open “soon”.
The scheme was announced on 12 April and will provide €20m per month in supports, with funding directly linked to fuel usage in 2025 to ensure those most affected by the fuel price increase receive the greatest assistance.
Speaking to reporters in Cyprus on Thursday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the scheme had to be worked out “from scratch”.
Farmers and agricultural contractors will benefit from a support rate equivalent to approximately 20c/l of green diesel used based on verified fuel consumption in 2025.
Minister Heydon said that there is a “clear path for applications and ensuing payments which will be announced next Wednesday”.
Banks
His comments come after he held a series of meetings with financial institutions this week on farmer and contractor supports.
The Department of Agriculture said that during these discussions, Minister Heydon emphasised the importance of flexibility and understanding from lenders, particularly in relation to credit lines and short-term financing.
“He highlighted to the banks that many farmers and contractors will be receiving payments under the Government’s forthcoming fuel support scheme, which will provide much needed assistance to the sector,” it added.
The Minister said that farmers and farm contractors are operating in a challenging environment, with significant cost pressures affecting cashflow.
It is vital that financial institutions show flexibility and work constructively with their customers
“The Government is stepping in with targeted fuel supports and we will be opening applications for these schemes soon.
"In the meantime, it is vital that financial institutions show flexibility and work constructively with their customers.
“The message is clear - farmers and contractors will receive support and, in the interim, they should be met with understanding by their lenders.
"This collaborative approach will help ensure stability across the sector. The Department will continue to engage with stakeholders to monitor the situation and ensure that supports are delivered effectively and in a timely manner,” he said.
