Records were left for dust in Macroom Mart on Saturday last where the Southwest Shorthorn Breeders Club held its third annual sale.

Selling for €3,820, Belmont Broadhok Vera, a Caramba Lisdoonvarna-sired maiden heifer from Co Kerry breeder Christina Belmonte, took home the highest price of the day.

It was also close to doubling the highest price for the 2024 sale. Bidding for the July 2024-born heifer opened at €2,500 and she was one of a number of animals to exceed €3,000.

Another heifer from the same herd and sire, Belmont Lovely Vic opened at the same money before the gavel fell at €3,080.

The maiden heifer section proved competitive with Castlehaven Jenny 4th from Skibbereen-based breeder, Phillip Salter, selling for €3,400 and another Kerry -based heifer, Currowside Roanie owned by Paudie O’Sullivan from Milltown selling for €3,050.

As ever, premium prices were available for halter-trained animals and this was especially evident in the maiden heifer section.

Marcus O'Sullivan, Milltown, Co Kerry leading his heifer, Currowside Roanie in the Southwest Shorthorn Breeders Club sale in Macroom Mart. The heifer owned by his father Paudie O'Sullivan sold for €3,050.

The prospect of having a heifer for the 2026 show circuit was in the minds of buyers when it came to the weanling heifer section too, with a good share of heifers making over or close to €2,000. A top price here of €3,340 went to Paddock Teresa, a February 2025-born heifer sired by Ballinlig Rocky from Drinagh-based breeder, Eugene Martin O’Neill. Two more 2025-born heifers from that herd sold for €2,600 and €2,350, while Kerry breeder, Paudie O’Sullivan, sold for €2,900 and €2,250 respectively. While Patrick McCarthy from the Velvetstown herd near Buttevant made €2,040 for a March 2025-born heifer. The general run of other autumn 2024-born and spring 2025-born heifers was from €1,050 to €1,920.

Following the sale, Irish Shorthorn Society PRO and Southwest club member, Aine O’Donovan Nicholson, said: “We’re delighted to have had such a successful sale of beef Shorthorns with quality animals exhibited and top prices achieved.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all who supported the sale and society president Amelda Middleton Leonard and her husband, Brian Leonard, for coming down and judging and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back here for next year’s sale.”
