Stealing the limelight at the Irish Simmental Cattle Society show and sale in Tullamore on Friday was Fearna Siegfrieds Son ET, which sold for the highest price of €10,100.
This powerhouse of a bull was the first lot to go through the ring, raising the bar high for those who followed.
Exhibited by Gerry Neenan from Co Mayo, this August 2024-born bull is sired by the forefather of the breed Siegfried, a bull born over 50 years ago.
Dark red in color, his dam is the Milton Lord Tiffany-bred cow Fearna Tiffany ET.
Ranking in the bottom 40% of the breed for replacement, terminal and dairy-beef traits, this uniquely bred bull did not qualify for any scheme.
However, he was the pick of pedigree breeders Eamon McCloskey of the Drumagarner Herd in Co Derry and Chris Traynor of the Kilmore Herd in Co Armagh, who purchased him in a two-way partnership.
Polled bull

This December 2024-born bull was placed first in his class before taking the award for reserve overall champion by judge Manus Connolly from the Ardunsaghan Herd in Co Leitrim.

Clonagh Trident Fabulous, shown by Garrett Behan with judge Manus Connolly, was overall champion and sold for €4,800.
Overall, the trade can only be described as tough, with a lower than average clearance, but a healthy average sale price of €5,466 did put a shine on things.
