Ploughing attendees flocked to the Irish Simmental Cattle Society marquee on Wednesday 17 September to admire the future stars of the breed. The decision by the Society to return to the Ploughing this year to host its calf championships proved a wise one, with many complimenting the exceptional display of calves and fantastic atmosphere around the ring.

Sponsored by Dovea Genetics and Hillcrest Simmentals, the championships were judge by Boomer Birch from the UK.

Catching his eye to nail down the first championship of the day was Seaview Tarzan PP sired by Coose Jericho P and out of the Seaview Tommy sired dam, Seaview Molly Mae. Exhibited by the O’Leary family from Co Cork, this January 2025-born calf won the national polled calf championship ahead of Thornford Trojan P, who went home with the reserve polled calf championship. Exhibited by the Callan family from Co Monaghan, Trojan is sired by Curaheen Gunshot P.
