I farm: “A 2.5-acre farm in London, based in Canada Water. We’re a working farm, but we also educate kids. It’s not massive, but for what we do we produce quite a bit; this year we finished 17 lambs and 20 goat kids.”

This week: “I’m picking up a new billy goat. We’ve been sorting out our muck heap. We bag it up and sell to the public. It’s sold in a feed sack for about £2/bag, but if you do it yourself it’s free. However, most people give us a donation because we are a charity. We start the feeding and mucking out at 9am, and we open to the public at 10am.”

Breeds: “There are 16 city farms in London and a lot of them have rare breeds. Our sheep are Oxford Downs and South Downs.”

Background: “I grew up in a London council estate. I always wanted to work with animals and the only experience I could get was on a farm. I started here when I was 10 years old at weekends and now I’m full time and studying an animal management course. When I’m finished I’d like to work on a big farm in the country, preferably with sheep.”

Staff: “There are four full-time staff; I’m the apprentice and then there’s the animal manager, we also have volunteers and work experience for kids from schools. People always say they don’t know what they want to do, but when they decide I think they should try get experience in that. I always said I would be a vet or a zookeeper.”

Quotable quote: “Working on a farm is great, when you get the train home you always get a free seat because you stink.”
