The Scottish national Texel sale took place in Lanark last week with a new world record price set for a sheep. The sale was set alight as ram lamb Sportsman Double Diamond sold for 350,000gns (£367,500 or over €411,000).

This super lamb was bred by Charlie Boden and family and secured in a three-way split for the Auldhouseburn, Procters and New View flocks.

Sired by last year’s Lanark champion Garngour Craftsman, who was purchased for 65,000gns, he is out of a homebred ewe by Plasucha Big Gun and sold with an index in the top 1% of the breed.

This price, accompanied with other high flyers at 50,000gns, 28,000gns and 17,000gns, meant that the Sportsman team sold a total of seven rams to average £71,655.

The 50,000gns ram came in the form of Sportsman Dirty Harry. Another son of Craftsman, Dirty Harry is out of a Sportsman A Star bred ewe and was purchased in a five way partnership.

A further 14 rams of the 283 sold hit five-figure sums. These coupled with the new record price meant that average price rose £1,317 on the year to settle at £4,703.

The second top price of the sale was a call of 65,000gns for Hexel Django from Donald and Sarah MacPherson.

This grandson of the 100,000gns Sportsman Batman was secured in a three way split between the Haddo, Cowal and Midlock flocks.

Another from Charlie Boden, this time from the Mellor Vale flock then followed that at 40,000gns, with this being Mellor Vale Déjà vu. Again by the 65,000gns Craftsman, he is out of a dam by Garngour Alabam and was shared by Harestone and Glenside.

Two then traded at 34,000gns, with the first of these being early in the day from the Knox family. This was Haddo Dynamite, a Hexel Born To Be Wild son out of a dam by Clinterty Yuga Khan. He sold to the Knock and Clinterty flocks.

Matching him at the money was Claybiry Dunkirk from the Draper family. This son of Straghbogie Cannonball was secured by the Midlock, Ettrick and Allanfauld flocks.

The Arnott family took home 32,000gns for Haymount Divine King. This son of Usk Vale Crackerjack was purchased by the breeder of the sire Willy Davis.

A bid of 30,000gns was received for Teiglum Dancing Brave from Andrew Clark. Sired by Procters Chumba Wumba, he was secured by the Milnbank flock.
