Dale Farm compiles heifer-rearing database

Dale Farm is currently seeking drystock farmers interested in diversifying farm income by entering a heifer-rearing arrangement with one of its suppliers.

The co-op will link up dairy farmers with potential rearing units, provided they are suitable.

It will help facilitate written agreements which benefit both parties, and which will include targets and responsibilities.

Farmers interested should contact Neville Graham at e-mail neville.graham@dalefarm.co.uk as early as possible.

Fertiliser sales down year on year

Fertiliser sales during the first six months of 2019 were down by 5% or 8,300t on the same period in 2018, DAERA statistics reveal.

For the first half of the year, 149,500t of fertiliser was delivered to NI farms compared to 157,800t for the same period last year.

In terms of fertiliser type, urea accounted for 20,000t, with the remaining 129,500t being a combination of compound and blended nitrogen product.

Mild conditions last winter saw many farms carrying heavy covers of grass into the spring, reducing the need for early season fertiliser.

Grass growth remained unseasonably strong during late spring and early summer, which would also have seen a reduced demand for fertiliser year on year.
