It only seems like yesterday that the 50th anniversary was being celebrated, but the Dealer caught wind of an event in west Cork to mark the 60th anniversary of the famous Farmers' Rights March.

The NFA West Cork Flying Column marching over Patrick’s Bridge in Cork City in October 1966, having left Bantry on 7 October at the start of the Farmers Rights Campaign. Included in the picture is Danny McCarthy, Rickard Deasy, Fachtna O’Callaghan, Sean Holland and Sean O’Brien.

I see the beginning of the 1966 NFA Farmers’ Rights March will be commemorated by West Cork IFA on Saturday.

It will honour the group of 16 men led by Rickard Deasy, who left Bantry on October 7 1966 and marched the 217 miles to Dublin to protest outside the offices of then Minister for Agriculture Charlie Haughey.

The event takes place at 2.30pm at The Square in Bantry on Saturday and some of the participants will be in attendance.
