The Dealer often overhears younger lads at the mart talk about being “ghosted” or “left on read”.

They say it happens when someone they’re chatting to online suddenly stops replying or disappears.

Well, it can happen to dairy co-ops too.

Apparently, North Cork Creameries has been ghosting its close neighbours and leaving messages left on read.

The Dealer hears that the co-op has lots of potential suitors that are willing not only to take over the milk pool, but to take over the plant at Kanturk and put the necessary investment in to get the waste water treatment plant up to scratch.

On the face of it, this would keep the jobs in the town and secure the future of the co-op shareholders.

Of course, the problem for the board of North Cork is that if the co-op is taken over, they’ll probably be surplus to requirements.

With the co-op set to celebrate its centenary in 2028, is the board hanging on for the back-slapping and cocktail sausages or acting in the best interests of the milk suppliers?
