An Irish scientist has been appointed to the top leadership team of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Professor Charlie Spillane from the University of Galway will soon be swapping the laid-back beauty of Connacht’s capital for the bustle of Rome, as he takes responsibility for the FAO’s science and innovation activity.

It is the first time an Irish person has been appointed to such a high leadership position in the FAO since its foundation in 1945.

Professor Spillane has been leader of the Agriculture, Food Systems and Bioeconomy Research Centre at the University of Galway since 2009.

The FAO is the United Nation’s lead agency for sustainable development and is focused on three goals: the eradication of hunger; the elimination of poverty; and the sustainable management and utilisation of natural resources.
