An extra 1,000 work permits for meat processing operatives and an extra 850 dairy farmer assistant permits have been announced by the Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke.
The quotas are available with immediate effect to address constraints in the meat and dairy sectors.
Minister Peter Burke said: “Economic migration is a vital aspect of addressing skills gaps and shortages in the labour market.
“After significant engagement with the sector and all stakeholders, we have made the decision to extend both quotas based on the demonstrated need in the agri-food sector.
“Alongside developments in technology, upskilling and workplace conditions, the permit system is integral to ensuring Ireland continues to have a competitive economy and agile workforce. These quotas recognise the constraints in the agri-food labour market and its importance in particular to the rural economy,” he said.
The IFA had called for an expansion of the permit allowance for dairy farms ahead of next spring.
IFA dairy chair Martin McElearney had said that “additional permits need to be issued immediately and a swift application process must commence.
“Cows will be calving in six weeks’ time and we need to ensure farms are equipped with sufficient labour,” McElearney added.
Since their introduction, 1,100 permits have been issued, providing a valuable workforce to the dairy sector.
In 2025 farmers and agents have become very frustrated with the application process leading to significant delays, the dairy chair added.
