Taking center stage at this year’s National Ploughing Championships will be the Irish Aberdeen Angus All-Ireland finals. In what could be the largest display of any one breed ever at the championships, it promises to be an event not to be missed.
Breeders from all four parts of the country will compete on Tuesday 16 September, hoping to put their name on the eye-catching All-Ireland trophy, which dates back to 1902.
Long-term sponsor of the event, Univet is again backing the finals, which have attracted 120 entries. Representatives from Univet, along with other gold sponsors Zurich and Angus Beef Ireland, will also be on hand for any inquiries visitors may have. Judging begins at 9.30am, with the two young stock person classes kickstarting the event.
This will be followed by a packed schedule, which sees a total of 12 classes and four major championships.
For those wishing to see the height of the action, the first of the championships will take place at 2.15pm, cumulating with the supreme All-Ireland championship taking place at 3pm.
Scottish judge
Tasked with judging this year’s prestigious event is Ewen Campbell, who runs the noted Kilmallie herd in Scotland. He comes with a wealth of experience, having produced a number of champions and five-figure bulls in recent years, which have went onto sell into some of the most recognised herds in the breed.
Many of the All-Ireland contestants and winners will remain on the stand for the week, so if it isn’t possible to make this extraordinary event on Tuesday, be sure to call in on Wednesday or Thursday also.
Wednesday
The Irish Aberdeen Angus Association will have its Youth Development team on hand to run demonstrations throughout the day on Wednesday 17 September.
These will be led by Irish YDP coordinator Niall Lynch, with the help of some of the YDP team that competed at the recent world forum in Australia.
These demos will focus on key areas such as clipping, grooming and showmanship and will take place at 10am, 1pm and 3pm.
All the demos will be using the selection of top-end stock in the marquee in a show-and-tell type scenario, so it is sure to draw a crowd.
Thursday
On Thursday 18 September the show ring will be used for a host of demonstrations again, this time focusing on stock selection for profitable production.
One of the countries leading classifiers will be linear scoring animals, with master judges from the Irish Aberdeen Angus Association highlighting the traits which made the breed unique, famous and profitable.
This will also include commentary on current factory requirements, demands of the consumer and how Aberdeen Angus is the go to breed for the current agricultural landscape. These demos will again take place at 10am, 1pm and 3pm.
Extravaganza
This marks a busy month for the Irish Aberdeen Angus Association which also has the much-anticipated extravaganza in Thurles Mart on Saturday 4 October, offering a catalogue of 50 pre-inspected animals.
Last year’s event broke all records seeing prices rise to €27,800. The much-anticipated catalogue, which includes pre-sale photos, will also be available to view online in the stand, or by checking out irishaberdeenangus.marteye.com.
Angus Beef Ireland
Joining the Irish Aberdeen Angus Association on the stand will be Angus Beef Ireland, which will be joined by its partner factories Ashbourne Meats, Dawn Meats, Foyle Foods and Liffey Meats.
Procurement agents from these leading factories will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and to discuss Angus requirements and farmer opportunities for the coming months.
There will be a €1,000 prize for the winner of the ‘guess-the-weight’ competition which will again see all proceeds made for to the Irish Pilgrimage Trust.
Angus Beef Ireland will also be using the National Ploughing Championships as a launch of a new report for its producers.
The report looks at the average daily weight gain of cattle over their lifetime and this is then compared to the national average for steers and heifers. Information on the report and instructions on how to use it will be available each day on the stand.
In keeping with previous years, a mobile catering unit serving premium Irish Aberdeen Angus beef will once again be in operation adjacent to the stand.
The world-renowned Aberdeen Angus steak burgers are always a runaway success each year with lines and lines of patrons sampling delicious Aberdeen-Angus beef daily.
Space for nature
Angus Beef Ireland will also be holding a ‘space for nature’ photo competition, the results of which will be revealed at the Ploughing.
Speaking ahead of the event, breed secretary Shane Murphy said: “The Irish Aberdeen Angus Association will again be joining with Angus Beef Ireland in what will no doubt be the highlight of the livestock section.
“From the prestigious All-Ireland finals to in depth demonstrations, this year’s stand is a must for any cattle enthusiast. Be sure to call around to speak to staff or the many members who will be showing what makes the Aberdeen Angus breed number one.”
The Irish Aberdeen Angus exhibition centre will be located at block 1, row 6, stand 134.
