On Saturday, the Irish Farmers Journal profiled the top five counties which had the highest average land price sales in 2016.

Here we have the five counties on the other end of the spectrum. The counties which had the lowest average prices for land offered for sale in 2016.

Leitrim

Once again, the county with the shortest coastline in Ireland had the lowest average land price. Co Leitrim had an average price of €4,560/acre in 2016 which was down 6% on the 2015 figure of €4,869/acre.

In total, 1,188 acres and 32 farms were offered for sale last year. The highest-priced sale was a 45.6 acre plot near Dromahair in north Leitrim which went for €6,200/acre.

Roscommon

After Leitrim comes its near neighbour, Co Roscommon.

The average price in 2016 was €5,144/acre. This represents an 11% fall on the 2015 figure of €5,801/acre.

In total, 3,178 acres and exactly 100 farms were offered for sale in Co Roscommon last year. Prices ranged from €2,100/acre for bad land to €10,400/acre for land close to Roscommon town.

Mayo

Staying in Connacht, Co Mayo had the third-lowest land price in 2016.

The average price for land sold in the county last year was €5,701/acre, which was up ever so slightly on the 2015 figure of €5,699/acre. Prices in Mayo ranged from €1,600/acre to €12,300/acre.

Clare

Another county along the western seaboard, Co Clare had average land price of €5,865/acre in 2016.

In total, 77 farms and 3,305 acres were offered for sale in the county last year. Land prices rose 9% in 2016 on the 2015 figure of €5,391/acre.

Prices ranged from €1,900/acre for land described as winterage-type to €13,100/acre for a 70 acre farm at Quin.

Sligo

And finally, Co Sligo had the fifth-lowest average land price in 2016 according to the Irish Farmers Journal Agricultural Land Price Report.

The average price in 2016 was €6,126/acre, close to the 2015 figure of €6,089/acre.

A total of 45 farms and 1,115 acres were offered for sale in the county last year and prices ranged from €1,900/acre to €15,800/acre.
