Teagasc Oak Park in Carlow is set to host a crops and cultivation open day on 28 June from 11am until 5pm. The free open day will include a cultivation demo and information on the latest research and practices in the college.
Cultivation demo
The cultivation demonstration is being organised in association with the Irish Farmers Journal. Different crop establishment methods will be highlighted and the different types of machinery available will be demonstrated live on the day.

Research
Researchers, tillage specialists and advisers will display the latest research findings for crops including winter and spring barley, oats and beans, and winter wheat and oilseed rape.
“The full range of agronomic practices will be on display including crop nutrition, cultivations and soil management, crop protection and integrated pest management (IPM) of disease, insects and grass weeds,” said head of crops research in Teagasc John Spink.
Characteristics
The work being conducted by the Virtual Irish Centre for Crop Improvement (VICCI) will also be on display. The centre is identifying sources of characteristics of varieties that will be of particular value to Irish tillage farmers, such as septoria resistance, more efficient use of nutrients and waterlogging resistance.
