The children at Footsteps Crèche in Kilkelly, Co Mayo got a very special treat last week when Paul Walker of Newport Shepherds paid a visit with his dog called Fleece.

Walker explained to the captivated children how dogs are used to control sheep and demonstrated the various commands and whistles employed in this work.

The Chilean-born shepherd’s skill, and the attentiveness of Fleece to his commands, had his young audience entranced, but the highlight of the piece was when the children got to pet a lamb that Paul had brought along.
