You don’t need me to tell you that Christmas is going to be different this year. But different doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy yourselves.

For very many families around the country, going to a pantomime is a big part of their Christmas tradition. And while physically attending a theatre won’t be possible this year, there are online options.

Many theatres and groups who normally put on pantos were forced to cancel performances as the pandemic escalated towards the backend of the year, but some have salvaged the situation and are moving online.

Here’s a flavour of what’s on offer.

Once Upon a Panto, The Olympia

This is an original fairy tale, including a beanstalk, magic carpet and an adventure into the unknown.

The cast includes Ryan Andrews, Erin McGregor, James Patrice and Maclean Burke, to name a few of the well-known faces.

It's available on demand from 23 December to 3 January. An online streaming ticket costs €15, plus booking fees. More information is available here.

Jack & the Beanstalk, University Concert Hall Limerick

This year’s University Concert Hall Limerick (UHL) panto is Jack & the Beanstalk. It stars Emmerdale’s Liam O’Brien, Dancing with the Stars' Dayl Cronin, alongside regulars such as Richie Hayes and Myles Breen. It’s available on demand from 26 to 31 December. Tickets cost €15. More information is available here.

The Sword in the Stone, The Helix

Also moving online this year is The Helix’s panto, The Sword and the Stone. It promises to bring laughs, boos, cheers, dances, special effects and an extra cinematic touch. The cast features Amilia Stewart, Eoin Cannon, Aidan Mannion and Gavin Ryan. There are six scheduled performances from 19 December to 2 January, which include a live question and answer session with members of the cast. It’s available on demand as well from 23 December to 5 January. All tickets cost €20. More information is available here.
