It was another busy weekend for Irish show jumping with Mullingar International CSI2* running over four days across the Bank Holiday weekend. The show included a packed schedule for both national and international riders.

Grand Prix

The 1.45 Grand Prix brought the show to an exciting close on Monday. Michael Pender lodged the winning clear round in 44.11 seconds with HHS Burnchurch.

Owned by Miguel Bravo and bred by Marion Hughes, the nine-year-old gelding by Heritage Fortunus and out of the Cavalier Royale sired dam, China Cavalier.

The gelding has three full siblings all bred by Hughes that are competing on the international circuit – HHS Faldo, HHS Fafa and HHS Fast Forward.

16 of the 53 combinations jumped clear in the first round to proceed to the jump-off. Eddie Moloney finished second with Andiamix Hero Z in a time of 46.51.

Little separated the next placing as Kenneth Graham lodged a clear round with George in 46.67 for third, ahead of Robert Harrison and Landlystes Rubina in 47.41 for fourth place.

Tholm Keane has had a good few weeks of late and he added to his record card when he partnered BMH Big Time into fifth, clear in 47.64, ahead of Francis Connors and Erne Lady Goldilocks, who jumped clear in 47.72.

International classes

The first international class was the Glenn Wood 1.25m Silver Tour, with 68 competitors taking up the gauntlet on Saturday.

Sven Hadley won the class when he jumped clear in 47.59 with the KWPN gelding, Ganorad. Owned by Hadley Sport Horses, the eight-year-old gelding is by Bacardi VDI and out of the Undercover sired dam, Anora. This combination also took the runner-up place in the accumulator on Sunday.

Eddie Moloney was close behind with Quiara M, in a time of 50.25 to finish second. This partnership also finished third in the proceeding international class and third in the Michael Morrissey Horse Trucks Accumulator 1.25m on Sunday. Owned by Charlie Soden, Quiara M is 15-year-old mare by Quidam’s Rubin and out of Cassandra (Carthago).

Victory in the Devenish Bet Show Jumping Live Qualifier - CSI2* 1.30m went to Tadhg Kearney, when he jumped clear with Fanta M in 59.25. Owned by Edmund Kearney, the nine-year-old KWPN gelding is by Cicero Z Van Paemel and out of Navarone sired dam, Saigon.

The Mullingar Equestrian Horse and Pony Sales 1.40m proved very competitive, with 25 of the 64 combinations booking their place in the jump-off. Kilkenny riders dominated this class, claiming three of the six top placings.

Jack Ryan lodged the winning round of 31.61 with Essenar High Hopes. Owned by Annemarie Fagan of Mullingar Equestrian there was plenty of support for this combination.

The Danish bred, is by Phin Phin and out of Leni-Jo (Indoctro). This combination have proved very consistent in the aged classes and recently finished third and fourth in two of the RDS qualifiers.

Not content with the win, the 17-year-old young rider also finished second with Moneybroom Dancer, jumping clear in 31.71. Eddie Moloney was hot on Ryan’s heels when he partnered Andiamix Hero Z to a clear in 31.71 for third.

Owned by Caroline Telsch’s Andimix Hero Z a nine-year-old, this gelding is by Aganix du Seigneur and is out of Boetia Hero (Andiamo Z).

Ryan was back in the ribbons on Sunday as he claimed another class with Essenar High Hopes in the Francis Derwin Equestrian 1.40m - Gold Tour. The combination was fastest of 12 clears in 68.40.

On Sunday, a maximum score of 65 for Tim McDonagh and Mr Boom Boom in a time of 51.52 saw him claim victory in the Michael Morrissey Horse Trucks Accumulator 1.25m. Bred by Claire Hughes, the eight year-old gelding is by Heritage Fortunus and out of HHS Diamond Exchange (Ramiro B).

The feature class on Sunday, the Devenish Nutrition Bet Showjumping Live Final CSI2* 1.30m, saw Galway native Thomas O’Brien claim victory.

Riding the 10-year-old Irish sport horse Miss Darco, he was fastest of four double clears in 30.89.

In the Dublin Horse Show Puissance qualifier, two combinations cleared the two metre high wall to share victory, they were Wesley Ryan with Larthago and Nano Healy with KMS Clintland.

Eddie Moloney’s consistency through-out the show meant he was awarded the Tailored Equestrian Leading International title. The Kilkenny rider was placed in seven of the nine international classes.

Young horse classes

In the national arena, it was a good day for Belmont House Stud as they won the three- and four-year-old championship. The four-year-old decider went to Mr Quincy B ridden by Damien Griffin.

In the three-Year-Old Koro D’or Loose Jumping Competition and Millstreet Qualifier, Andrea Etter and Belmont House Stud won when judges Heather Wright Dean and Norman Allen picked the unnamed mare, by Quicksilver B x Radolin as their winner.

On Sunday, Jack Ryan was back in the ribbons, when won the ISH Studbook seven-year-old decider with BBS McGregor (ISH).

Bred and owned by Marguerite Ryan, the gelding is by Cardento (ISH) (TIH). The pair delivered a double clear in a time of 38.54 seconds to snatch victory. BBS McGregor was one of only twelve double clears in the seven-year-old class.

In both the five-year-old final and the six-year-old final 10 combinations split the top prize.
