Opening this year’s National Ploughing Championships at Ratheniska, Co Laois, President Michael D Higgins described the event as a celebration of rural Ireland, Irish farming and those who farm. “One of the most important aspects of the Ploughing is not only the celebration of farming and rural Ireland, but it reminds all of us of how important farming and farmers are to the Irish economy and Irish society.”

President Higgins said he is “very well aware” of the challenges facing farmers, especially the volatility of prices, but said the sector had been central in the recovery of rural Ireland. He added that beyond its economic importance, Ireland should never forget the significant and profound role that farming plays in society and to the planet. “Farming connects us to one of the most basic and fundamental of human activities, the production of food – food that is necessary to sustain human life.”

During his visit, the President toured the Ploughing site before winding his way to the Irish Farmers Journal stand, where he watched a livestock demonstration presented by members of the Irish Farmers Journal team.
