The storm didn’t put off the buyers in Nenagh, where good demand for grazing cattle was still evident.

David White of Central Auctions said: “There is still a lot of grass around the place and hopefully once we get over this band of weather conditions will improve again.”

He said that cow numbers have been dropping over the last number of weeks but a prolonged poor spell of weather could change this very quickly.

Cows averaged €135/kg, with dairy cows trading at between €1.25/kg and €135/kg. Heavier and better-fleshed beef bred cows were making €1.50/kg to €1.60/kg, with a top price of €1,290 paid for a 805kg 2012-born Hereford.

This 2008-born Charolais cow weighed 740kg and sold for €1,140 (€1.54/kg).

Bullocks

Bullocks between 350kg and 400kg averaged €1.88/kg. However, there was a huge disparity between dairy- and beef-bred cattle. Friesian crosses were making €1.45/kg to €1.50/kg, while good-quality Charolais and Limousin lots were in demand and making between €2.40/kg and €2.50/kg.

In the 400kg to 500kg weight bracket, the average price paid was €1.91/kg, with Friesian types making €1.50/kg to €1.70/kg, while Angus and Hereford dairy crosses were making between €1.85/kg and €2.10/kg. Better-conformed Limousin, Angus and Charolais cattle sold between €2.20/kg and €2.35/kg.

A similar average of €1.90/kg was achieved for bullocks from 500kg to 600kg. Again dairy types were making €1.75/kg to €1.95/kg. Limousin types were €2.00/kg to €2.10/kg.

A small number of bullocks over 600kg averaged €1.86/kg, ranging from €1.75/kg for dairy types to €2.02 for a Charolais weighing 625kg (€1,260).

This pair of June 2018-born Limousin bullocks weighed 597kg and sold for €1,230 (€2.06/kg).
These four Angus cross bullocks born August 2019 weighed 477kg and sold for €1,060 (€2.22/kg).

This April 2019-born Limousin weighed 445kg and sold for €1,080 (€2.43/kg).

Heifers

There was a small entry of heifers on the day, with 350kg to 400kg animals averaging €2.00/kg while those from 400kg to 500kg averaged €1.96/kg. This ranged from €1.80/kg to €190/kg for Angus cross dairy types up to €2.05/kg to €2.15/kg for Continental types.
