I see there’s a scrap going on in Limerick over a seat on the Dairygold board. Unusually, a sitting member looking to renew his mandate is being challenged. He is Ger O’Dwyer from the Oola area and the challenger is Vincent Griffin from Granagh. More often than not sitting members are left unchallenged.

Some observers reckon that this is, in fact, part of an ongoing power struggle within the Dairygold board with members in a Cork region looking to get like-minded farmers elected. Their ambitions could be helped by low-level discontent among suppliers over milk price.

The result of the Limerick election will be known on Friday.
