Quality is the main driver when it comes to the cattle rings and the same is being seen in the sheep rings, as breeding sales kick off across the country.

Ennis Mart’s breeding sheep sale saw buyers back the sheep industry through bidding hard for quality lots of sheep in both the hoggets and ewe lambs.

The general trade for hoggets was €300/head and above for quality lots, with several select lots, including some prizewinners from the pre-sale show, commanding over €350/head.

Top call of the day was a quality pen of Suffolk-cross Cheviot ewes, which were vaccinated for clostridial and black leg selling for €420/head.

Some lighter hoggets were on offer, selling below the €250/head mark.

Those these were smaller in numbers, while some poorer-quality hoggets with a low weight for age or less stylish lots sold below the €200/head mark.

Sharp trade

Ewe lambs were also a sharp trade for top-quality lots.

Those suited to breeding this year with style commanded prices of €230/head upwards or €4.55/kg up to €5.13/kg, while lesser-quality lots suitable for either breeding or finishing sold closer to the €4/kg mark.

A small number of purebred Suffolk and Charolais ram lambs sold from €400 to €820/head.
