Iveragh Co-operative Mart has taken the step to temporarily suspend live weighing of sheep until rain arrives in the southeast and midlands, which is its main customer base for store lambs. Mike Kissane, mart manager, announced this at the annual sheep show and sale at the south Kerry venue on Wednesday.
“We will be back weighing sheep, if everyone sits back and don’t panic I don’t know if it’s going to be August or September, but we’ll have to wait for the rain first,” he said.
“We can organise a sheep sale but the prices won’t be good because there will be no buyers, so I think we’re better off to sit tight. We’re very lucky around here, we have grass. I’ve the same customers with 30 years, but they just cannot buy them at the moment, but they will buy the sheep when the weather changes.”
