The discovery of horses with multiple microchips at an abattoir in the Co Kilkenny area led to the Department of Agriculture’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) being called in last week.

It is understood the discovery was made on Wednesday and authorities were alerted immediately.

“The Department cannot comment on ongoing investigations,” a spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal.

The primary concern from such a finding is the integrity and protection of Ireland’s valuable meat trade.

Horsemeat passed fit for human consumption is exported from Ireland to Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
