Longford Agricultural Show took place on Sunday 1 July. Ideal weather conditions due to a drop in temperature, an abundance of quality cattle, music and loads of attractions throughout the field all led to a very successful show day
Hereford
The largest entries again this year were in the pedigree Hereford section. UK judges Philip and Laura Vincent, who operate the well-known Pulham Hereford Herd, tapped out Shiloh Farm Elite as their champion. This son of Steil Gerard was owned and bred by Sarah and Hugh Murray. This July 2017-born bull won his class and the Paul & Vincent all-Ireland Hereford bull calf championship before taking the overall Hereford champion title of the show.
Michael Molloy’s Moyclare Piscies was placed second to the champion in the lineup and went on to be tapped out reserve champion of the show.
Belgian Blue
Joshua Miller and Martin Harold judged the Belgian Blues and the champion in this category was Carraneeney Maggie. This March 2018-born heifer is owned and bred by Joe Davis and was shown by Gillian and Declan Davis. She is a daughter of Gitan and an Adajio Dam. Local man George Hagarty was reserve with Mack Lady, a January 2017-born Boherard Cantona daughter.

Brian McAllister was back on judging duty in the Charolais ring. The Charolais classes were run in conjunction with the Midland and Western Charolais Club Championships and saw an increase on exhibits from last year. Following on from her Balmoral and Athlone show successes Drumshane Madamoiselle took top spot for Brendan Feeney and the Bostonia herd. Herd manager Darragh McManus went on to take the reserve spot with his aptly name Bostonia NonStopabull who has already taken several red rosettes this year. The September to December 2017 bull class in particular stood out for its very high quality.
