There seems to be no stopping Jordan Coyle in his bid to claim the Connolly’s Red Mills Spring Tour, as he took another win at Portmore last Saturday aboard Jim Maneely’s Amigo VH Winkenshof Z.

Second last to go, Coyle wasted no time from the start, and a tight turn to the double matched with a strong gallop home saw him clock the unbeatable time of 32.43 seconds. This was the third win of the tour for the Derry rider who won at Cavan and Ravensdale.

Coyle also took the runner-up spot with Carnoneybridge Challenger. Owned by Eileen McKinney, Carnoneybridge Challenger is an eight-year-old gelding by Hermes De Reve and out of ISHD Cosette.

Coyle said: “I am delighted with the win. We have jumped three rounds of the tour and he has won all three. He is a great horse and he has come a long way from last year. My other horse Carnoneybridge Challenger also jumped really well. I started riding him halfway through the season last year and he was placed in a good few of the aged classes.”

It was a competitive class with 13 of the 48 starters securing their place in the timed round. Speed merchant Liam O’Meara didn’t hang around with Kenny’s Flight and a clear in 35.03 proved good enough for third place. Kenny’s Flight is an eight-year-old gelding by Errigal Flight.

Tyrone rider Emily Turkington didn’t disappoint as she lodged a clear with Willem in 36.45 for eventual fourth. Sophie Dalm steered Evita De Wulf Selection to fifth place in 36.45.

Luke Campbell completed the top six line-up when delivering a clear with Applemount Sport Horses' nine-year-old Ard VDL Douglas-sired stallion Trebra Douglas in 38.90. Winner of the last week’s round at Killossery, Gerard Clarke and Rafiki was back in the line-up, claiming seventh place clear in 39.24

Hannah Patterson’s clear round with Daberlina M in 40.90 saw her finish in eighth place and earned her the leading young rider prize.

Ballinamona

On Sunday the action moved to Ballinamona and Kilkenny’s Vincent Byrne took his second Spring Tour win. Second last to go, Byrne crossed the line with nothing to add with Caugherty in 28.13 seconds.

Byrne said: "It was great to have another win with the mare in such a short space of time, having won the previous week at Wexford Equestrian. It was a competitive class and I knew, with Liam O’Meara coming after me, I would have to put in a fast round.”

Last to go with Mr Coolcaum, Liam O’Meara pulled out all the stops but a clear in 28.73 proved only good enough for second place.

Young rider Christopher Connell set the bar high with BVS Echo Diamond when he delivered a clear in 29.45, which later proved good enough for third.

Local rider Francis Connors delivered his best result with Uskerty Diamond Lady, clear in 30.17 for eventual fourth. Connors returned to take sixth place with Hyperion, clear in 31.13.

Young rider Jack Ryan played it safe with Cavalier Teaca and a clear in 30.60 saw him take fifth place. Anna Carway and Winner were seventh when clear in 31.33, ahead of Michael Pender and HHS Hercules in 33.29. For the second week, David Costello was the Top Pro Am rider.
